Long-standing approaches to measuring quality of care have masked dramatic and disturbing variances in outcomes among people with different demographic characteristics. Despite emerging awareness of deep-rooted health inequities, substantial work remains to establish a systematic approach to identifying, sizing, and most importantly redressing these disparities. Experts have cited incomplete data collection and failure to regularly review measures that are stratified by characteristics such as race, ethnicity, language, and sex as significant barriers to reducing these inequities.

In response to this challenge, the Health Evolution Forum in 2022 launched the Health Equity Pledge, which has been supported by our Roundtable on Data-Driven Health Equity Strategies, as a bold, cross-industry initiative to meaningfully strengthen data foundations through the collection, stratification, and review of race, ethnicity, language, and sex data. Ultimately, the Pledge aimed to enable organizations across the industry to more effectively identify disparities, diagnose their root causes, and instill accountability for eliminating them.

Our new report, Advancing Health Equity with Data and Bold Commitment, details the transformative journey of the Health Equity Pledge and its more than 50 participating provider, health plan, life sciences, technology, and other organizations from across the health care ecosystem. The report highlights accomplishments, insights, and lessons learned from participants as they conclude the Pledge’s initial phase. It underscores the power of collaboration, innovation, and transparency in driving systemic change and provides a roadmap for sustaining this critical work.
