With 2019 closing out, it’s time to look back at the year that was in health care.

What were the issues that kept payer, provider and life sciences executives busy over the last 12 months? Some were about the major policy changes impacting the industry. One of the most prominent was the introduction of pricing transparency rules that required providers to list the prices they negotiate with insurers for 300 “shoppable” services and payers to reveal a member’s expected out-of-pocket costs through an online tool.

Some of the issues were about operational challenges, such as dealing with the industry’s major talent crunch and finding ways to diversify their workforce. Some were zeroed in on creating new partnerships and dealing with the new competition they’re facing from tech giants such as Google and Apple. Other leaders were focused on finding better ways to engage and connect with patients, while ensuring health care doesn’t become too corporate.

It was an eventful year to be certain.
