Paul Tufano
Chairman & CEO, AmeriHealth Caritas
Paul A. Tufano is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies, a leading Medicaid managed care organization headquartered in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania and providing products and services across the United States. The company’s mission is to help those most in need receive care, stay well, and build healthy communities. During his tenure as CEO, the company has successfully launched entirely new markets, implemented new lines of business in existing markets, and experienced significant growth.
Mr. Tufano has also held senior leadership positions within Independence Health Group, parent company of AmeriHealth Caritas, having served as its President, Executive Vice President, and General Counsel.
Mr. Tufano is a respected voice on integrated care models that address whole-person health and strategies to help alleviate poverty and health inequities. He has long promoted greater attention to the social determinants of health – education, job training, housing, nutritious food, transportation and support services – and innovative ways to manage the health care needs of complex populations.
Prior to joining Independence Health Group, and AmeriHealth Caritas, Mr. Tufano served as General Counsel of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania from 1995 through 1999, in the administration of Governor Tom Ridge as a member of the Governor’s cabinet. Mr. Tufano and his staff of over 500 attorneys represented Governor Tom Ridge and the Executive Branch in litigation, transactions, and regulatory, legislative and criminal justice matters.
Mr. Tufano is a member of the boards of America’s Health Insurance Plans, United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey, the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, and he is the immediate past Chairman of both the Board of Trustees of Villanova University and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.
Mr. Tufano is a graduate of Villanova University, where he earned both his bachelor’s degree and law degree.
