J. Nwando Olayiwola, MD
SVP & Chief Health Equity Officer, Humana
Nwando Olayiwola, MD, SVP & Chief Health Equity Officer, Humana, where she will set direction and establish strategy to promote health equity across all Humana lines of business, including its care delivery assets. She will lead work to define enterprise-wide measures of equity, create goals for improvement and coordinate efforts to achieve them. In addition, Dr. Olayiwola will further Humana’s focus on cultural sensitivity, ensuring that it’s fully integrated into the design and development of Humana clinical programs, products, services and all member interactions and communications, while working collaboratively with the broader health care community to advance health equity so health care can work better for everyone, regardless of background, age or economic status. Dr. Olayiwola will assume the role effective April 5, 2021.
Prior to Humana, Dr. Olayiwola, was Chair & Professor, Department of Family and Community Medicine, The Ohio State University College of Medicine, where she was the Founding Director of the Center for Primary Care Innovation & Transformation and Chief of Family Health Services. Additionally, Dr. Olayiwola served as a faculty advisor on anti-oppression, health disparities and health equity research the co-Chair of the OSU Medical Center’s Anti-Racism Action Plan Oversight Committee.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, she has been a national voice for telehealth expansion, primary care redesign, improving the digital divide and championing anti-racism and health equity efforts. Her team’s work to expand telehealth during the pandemic and her novel description of a new “frontweb” of care was published in JMIR-Public Health in August 2020. She is the lead author on a seminal August 2020 article in Health Affairs on making anti-racism a core value in academic medicine, as well as an August 2020 article in The Lancet on what organizations can do to combat racism.
She has also served as the inaugural Chief Clinical Transformation Officer for RubiconMD, a leading eConsult platform that improves primary care access to specialty care for underserved patients. Olayiwola also previously provided clinical care to underserved patients at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, was Director of the UCSF Center for Excellence in Primary Care, Chief Medical Officer of the largest Federally Qualified Health Center system in Connecticut, Community Health Center, Inc.
