Michael Wagner, MD

MICHAEL WAGNER, M.D., F.A.C.P. has served as President and CEO of Tufts Medical Center since September 2013. He previously served as President and CEO of the Tufts Medical Center Physicians Organization (Tufts MCPO) beginning in September 2012. Over the course of his career, Dr. Wagner has gained a unique perspective on health care delivery through his work as an executive in both academic and community hospitals and clinically in both primary care and inpatient medicine. Dr. Wagner has been a leader in designing better ways to care for patients, including overseeing a variety of quality and safety initiatives to improve outcomes of medical care.
Dr. Wagner began his career as a primary care physician in Tufts Medical Center’s internal medicine practice more than 20 years ago. He returned to the Medical Center in 1999 as Chief of General Medicine, a role held until 2003. More recently, Dr. Wagner was named Chief of Internal Medicine and Adult Primary Care at Tufts Medical Center in 2008; he added the title of Chief Medical Officer in January 2011, and served in that role until the middle of 2013. Dr. Wagner also has served in various clinical and administrative roles at the University of Rochester, Fidelis Care, and Cove HealthCare, all in New York, and at EmCare in Dallas, Texas.
Dr. Wagner holds major national committee assignments as a member of the University HealthSystem Consortium Board of Directors and the Society of General Internal Medicine Commission on Physician Payment Reform. He currently holds the rank of Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine.
Dr. Wagner graduated magna cum laude from Connecticut College and earned a medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 1986. He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. His clinical specialties are internal medicine, hospital medicine and primary care.
