Ainsley MacLean, MD

Chief Medical Information Officer & Chief AI Officer, Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group

Dr. Ainsley MacLean is Chief Medical Information Officer and Chief AI Officer for the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group. In these roles she oversees a large team of software engineers, physician informaticists, and clinical analysts in the design and implementation of all technology, AI and telehealth enhancements, advancing our digital and AI first strategy alongside the entire executive team and partners across Kaiser Permanente. Dr. MacLean is the senior physician executive accountable for our electronic medical record, patient portal and all associated technologies at Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States.

A founder and co-executive sponsor of the Permanente Medicine Artificial Intelligence Center of Excellence, Dr. MacLean is certified by and on the advisory board for the American Board of AI and Medicine (ABAIM). She is an official member of the Forbes Technology Council and has published several articles in this role on AI and other technologies. As associate medical director for Radiology and POCUS, she oversees the diagnostic and interventional radiology teams who perform more than 800,000 imaging examinations and procedures annually, as well as a robust region-wide point of care ultrasound program which spans 20 specialties.

Dr. MacLean serves on the Kaiser Permanente Ventures Investment Committee. She holds several local and national KP technology leadership roles, including the executive sponsor of the Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States Technology Coordinating Group, which coordinates the procurement, life cycle replacement, and future investment into imaging, surgical, procedural and monitoring equipment, PACs, and other technologies. She serves on the KP National Products Council (NPC) leadership team and KP Enterprise Imaging Strategy committee.

A recent graduate of the Harvard Business School Executive Leadership Program of Kaiser Permanente, Dr. MacLean is also a graduate of Brown University, where she concentrated in the visual arts, and the Warren Alpert Medical School at Brown University, where she received her medical degree. She holds a certificate in Leadership and Management from the Wharton School online at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. MacLean completed her residency in diagnostic radiology and fellowship in neuroradiology at Harvard Medical School’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and is board-certified in both.

She is the Principal Investigator for the Kaiser Permanente Study Site of the TMIST Breast Cancer Screening Trial from the National Cancer Institute, and previously the Principal Investigator for the Brevera Breast Biopsy Trial, as well as an upcoming trial focusing on the use of AI in Breast Cancer screening. She is passionate about enhancing the patient care experience, in particular for women undergoing screening mammography. She and her team implemented a service in which screening mammogram results are delivered to patients within 60 minutes, eliminating sleepless nights for tens of thousands of women annually.

Dr. MacLean is past president of the American College of Radiology’s District of Columbia Chapter. She was recently elected as a fellow of the American College of Radiology, to be conferred in 2025. She is on the Board of Directors for Halcyon, a non-profit incubator focused on impact-driven business and has previously served on the Board of Directors of the National Women’s History Museum
